A Phi Phi islands tour is a boat day around the two Phi Phi islands, Phi Phi Leh (Phi Phi Le) with Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, and Phi Phi Don with its village and lunch stop, usually ending on Bamboo Island. What every Phi Phi boat sees

The Phi Phi islands sit in the Andaman Sea between Phuket and Krabi, inside Hat Noppharat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. Two islands matter for a tour. Phi Phi Le is the uninhabited one, a short boat ride south of Phi Phi Don: steep limestone cliffs around Maya Bay, Loh Samah Bay, the Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave. Phi Phi Don is the larger, lived-in island, where the twin bays of Ton Sai and Loh Dalum meet at the village, the pier, the hotels and the restaurants.

So the day looks much the same whoever runs it. The boat ties up at the jetty in Loh Samah Bay and you walk across to Maya Bay’s beach; it swims or cruises inside Pileh Lagoon; it passes Viking Cave, which you see from the water; it stops off Monkey Beach; it lands on Phi Phi Don for lunch; and most day boats end with a swim on Bamboo Island, north-east of Phi Phi Don. Where you set off, and what it changes

From Krabi or Ao Nang. The crossing is the short one: about 45 to 50 minutes by speedboat from the piers at Ao Nang. Most days include hotel pickup in Ao Nang, Krabi town, Klong Muang and Ao Nam Mao, and guests on Railay wait at the floating pier on Railay East. From Phi Phi Don itself. If you sleep on the island, Maya Bay is minutes away by boat, and half-day longtails and speedboats leave from Ton Sai in the early morning, when the bay is quietest, and again in the afternoon for sunset and the glowing plankton. From Phuket. The crossing is longer, about an hour each way by speedboat, and the day is the same shape with a later or earlier start. Maya Bay’s rules and the park fee

Maya Bay is for walking and looking. You land on the far side, at the jetty in Loh Samah Bay, because boats may not moor in the bay itself; swimming in Maya Bay is not allowed; in April 2026 a visitor who went in was fined 5,000 baht, and the maximum penalty is 100,000 baht. Visitors come ashore in timed rounds of up to 375 people for an hour each, between 07:00 and 18:00, and the bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September so the reef can recover; Loh Samah Bay, where the jetty is, and Ao Lo Ko close for the same weeks, so boats neither land nor snorkel there. In those weeks boats cruise past instead. Every tour here swims somewhere else: in Pileh Lagoon, off Phi Phi Le or on Bamboo Island.

The national park fee is 400 baht an adult and 200 baht a child, set by the Department of National Parks for Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Le and Bamboo Island. The park has sold electronic tickets since July 2020, and since 15 October 2025 e-tickets are the rule at six Andaman marine parks, Phi Phi among them; carry your passport, as TAT advises, and keep the ticket for inspection. Most Krabi days leave it out of the price and you pay it in cash on the day; a few, such as Thalassa’s small-group day and the Phi Phi half-days by Discover Thailand, include it. Early, sunset or the classic day

On the classic day you share Maya Bay with the other day boats. If you would rather walk onto it before most of them, the early-bird days pick up in Ao Nang from about 05:50 to 06:30: Krabi Ezy Trails’ early bird adds Tup and Poda islands and is from US$79 a person in current promotion (usually US$87), rated 4.9 from 3,533 reviews. The sunset days start later and end after dark: Guide Kratae’s sunset day leaves at 10:00, has a barbecue dinner on Poda Island and a night swim among glowing plankton at Koh Rang, from US$74 a person (checked November 2026).

The sea through the year

The calmer months are December to April, when the prevailing wind at Krabi is from the north-east or east. At Krabi’s weather station, February averages 36 mm of rain over 4 rainy days and January 97 mm over 8; from May to October, with the wind from the south-west and west, each month brings 210 to 293 mm and rain on 18 to 21 days, October being the wettest. Boats run in most of that weather, but the sea can be rough, operators sometimes hold back when the waves run high, and Maya Bay is shut in August and September. The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects the dry season to settle by December, so a spare day in your plan helps from October into November.
