Bamboo Island Tour

Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Phai) is a small, flat island with a white beach about 9 km north-east of Ton Sai pier on Phi Phi Don, in a straight line, and it lies inside Hat Noppharat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. A Bamboo Island tour is almost always a Phi Phi day that includes it, usually as the last stop after Maya Bay on foot, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and lunch on Phi Phi Don, and it leaves from Phuket, from Krabi and Ao Nang, from Ko Lanta or from Phi Phi Don itself. The park fee for a foreign adult is 400 baht, set by the Department of National Parks for Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island together, and five of the eight days on this page charge it on top of the price, at least on some options. The day from Phuket

One Asia Corporation’s day is listed at 8 hours; with the transfers, pickup is between 07:00 and 08:00 and you are back at the pier around 17:00, so it does not suit anyone with a flight the same day. Hotel pickup in Phuket province comes with the options that include it; otherwise you check in at the pier at Rassada harbour, at the “Yacht Master” sign, before 08:15. The speedboat takes about an hour each way and carries 35 to 70 passengers.

The order of the day: 50 minutes on Maya Bay, reached on foot from Loh Samah Bay; Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave; Monkey Beach from the boat; 45 minutes swimming and snorkelling off Phi Phi Leh; an international buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don, with a halal menu, and Thai dishes without pork or beef; a look at Nui Bay; then an hour and a half of free time on Bamboo Island before the hour back. Water and juice, seasonal fruit, a guide, seasickness pills on request and a mask and snorkel are included; a towel and tips are not.

The park fee on this day depends on the option you book: some include the national park fees, and on the others they are “400 THB per adult/200 per child paid in cash on the day”. Who should pick another day: the listing rules out children under 3, anyone over 60, pregnant travellers, people prone to seasickness and people with back, heart or breathing problems, and anyone who had back, leg or arm surgery within the previous 12 months.

All of them are speedboat days except the last, and all but the two from Ton Sai include a hotel pickup or a transfer on at least one option. Three choices change the day most:

• Bamboo Island first. V. Marine Tour’s premium day goes from Royal Phuket Marina straight to Bamboo Island and does Maya Bay last, the reverse of most boats; the park fee, insurance and a buffet lunch at a resort on Phi Phi Don are included, from US$104 a person in current promotion (usually US$110).
• A sunrise start. V. Marine Tour’s sunrise day leaves Royal Phuket Marina for breakfast on Khai Nai at dawn, then Maya Bay, lunch on Phi Phi Don and an hour on Bamboo Island; sunrise sightings depend on the weather, from US$110 a person in current promotion (usually US$116).

Every fee the listings print

• The national park fee, 400 baht a foreign adult, one fee for Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island together. It is included on V. Marine Tour’s premium day and sunrise day, on Discover Thailand’s day from Ton Sai and on some of One Asia Corporation’s options. The others charge it on top: One Asia Corporation “400 THB per adult/200 per child paid in cash on the day”; Sea Eagle Tour “400 THB per adult and 200 THB per child, to be paid at the point of entry”; Oh-Hoo “400THB per adult and 200THB per child”; Discover Thailand from Ko Lanta “400 Baht per adult or 200 Baht per kid 4-11 years old”; Actraveler “400 THB/person, cash only, payable once per day”.
• Oh-Hoo: an “Extra transfer charge 100 THB/PAX (round trip) from Krabi Town, Klong Muang, or Tub Kaek”; pickup from Ao Nang and Ao Nam Mao is included.
• Sea Eagle Tour: a longtail ride through Pileh Lagoon is “available for an extra charge on-site”; gratuities for the guide and boat staff and alcoholic drinks are not included, and there is no pickup at Tonsai Bay, Centara Grand Beach Resort, or near the airport, the bus terminal and Krabi Old Town.
• One Asia Corporation: towel and tips. V. Marine Tour: alcoholic drinks on the sunrise day; alcohol, a towel and tips on the premium day. Actraveler: hotel transfer and accommodation.

Rules on Bamboo Island and around it

• The park. Bamboo Island is part of Hat Noppharat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, so the park’s rules apply on the beach and in the water. Keep your fee ticket with you; officers check them.
• Sunscreen. Thailand’s national parks ban sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC) or butylparaben, with a fine of up to 100,000 baht; the rule has been in force since 4 August 2021.
• Waves. Discover Thailand's day from Ko Lanta visits Bamboo Island only when the waves are not too high and replaces it with another stop when they are, and most of the listings here warn that the order of the stops changes with the weather and the tide.
• Maya Bay’s closure. The park closes Maya Bay, Loh Samah Bay and Ao Lo Ko every year from 1 August to 30 September, and keeps the rest of the park open, Bamboo Island included. In those weeks One Asia Corporation’s boats view Maya Bay from the water and keep the rest of the day, and Sea Eagle Tour’s day runs as usual with Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and Bamboo Island. Swimming in Maya Bay is not allowed at any time; Maya Bay from Phi Phi has the rest of its rules.
